Lowell introduced Bidart to Elizabeth Bishop, another important poet from the generation that precedes his own. Bi- FRANK BIDART / 21 dart and Bishop also became good friends and had a lasting relationship; Bidart is the coexecutor of Bishop’s literary estate. Bidart joined the faculty of Wellesley College in 1972 and has continued to teach courses in literature and poetry writing there. He has also taught at other colleges and universities, including Brandeis University and the University of California at Berkeley.
This tentatively hopeful ending strikes a new note in Bidart’s oeuvre, pointing toward a capacity to experience joy despite the insurmountable paradoxes his poems painstakingly illuminate. DESIRE In many ways, Bidart’s fourth book, Desire (1997), continues the project that he has involved himself in from the beginning of his writing career. But it also marks out new territory both formally and thematically. As the title suggests, the unifying theme is Eros. While forbidden erotic love is the specific focus of the long poem that closes the volume, Bidart exposes the compulsive, unbidden component that is present in all forms of desire.
