DINSMORE WOODS I AND STATE NATURE PRESERVE n 1842, James and Martha Dinsmore built their home amid acres of old-growth forest in Western Boone County, Kentucky. Located in the northern section of the Bluegrass region, this area has remained relatively undisturbed and provides Kentucky’s only example of Pleistocene glaciations.

With a stunning mosaic of old-growth oak, hemlock, beech, and poplar, Blanton Forest has trees that measure three or four feet in diameter. Rhododendrons, mountain bogs, and more than 400 plant species, including sphagnum moss and cinnamon ferns, can be found in Blanton Forest, some of which have thrived in the forest for hundreds of years. The federally endangered blackside dace still survives in Watt’s Creek, which bubbles deep within the forest’s dark interior. In 1995, 1,075 acres of the forest were dedicated as a nature preserve, but the preserve has grown to now encompass 3,098 acres.
